(ClimateRadar) Energy market regulation in the UK needs to be overhauled to meet the challenges of carbon reduction and renewables targets, according to Government advisory body the Sustainable Development Commission. In a report published today (19 September), the Commission argues that reducing greenhouse gas emissions, should be made central to Ofgem’s remit in order to meet the needs of future consumers.
The report, Lost In Transmission – The role of Ofgem in a changing climate, highlights some of the ways in which Ofgem could play a long-term role in reducing carbon emissions from electricity and heat production.

(ClimateRadar) It is an overlooked and yet unbelievable fact: farmed animals produce more greenhouse gas emissions (18%) than the world’s entire transport system (13.5%). Today The Vegetarian Society is launching a new campaign called “Silent but Deadly” to point out that being vegetarian helps climate change, and hopefully convert more people to become vegetarian. Liz O’Neill Head of Communications at The Vegetarian Society said, “Silent but Deadly is about getting the reader’s attention, making them think, and hopefully want to find out more about the connection between diet and climate change.”

The environment group Friends of the Earth has been split by a bitter internal row after its directors approached the broadcaster BSkyB to set up a joint campaign on climate change which could be worth more than £1.7m. Executives at FoE received a barrage of complaints from senior campaigners after they decided to bid to become Sky’s favoured charity in a three-year deal which would give the group direct access to Sky’s 8.6 million subscribers and its satellite channels.
