Schroders launches new Climate Change Fund

It will be managed by Simon Webber and Matthew Franklin, who already run a similar climate change fund for Asian investors. New British Academic Center to receive £1b funding

(ClimateRadar.com) The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has been attributed to The Midlands Consortium. The Midlands Consortium is comprised of the universities of Birmingham, Loughborough and Nottingham – all with extensive and complementary energy related research activities. The new group will receive £1 billion to manage a national institute to develop cleaner energies.

Nine companies commit to carbon footprint products

(ClimateRadar.com) Following the carbon footsteps of Walkers Crisps and Innocent Drinks, nine more companies are joining the carbon labeling bandwagon and working with the Carbon Trust in labeling their products. Companies such as Coca-Cola, Cadbury Schweppes, have joined the cabron labeling scheme managed by The Carbon Trust.

BT launches carbon impact assessment service

(ClimateRadar.com) BT today announced that its newly formed Global Services sustainability practice has launched a service to help large corporates and public sector organisations reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint. BT’s carbon impact assessment enables organisations to accurately calculate the amount of CO2 emissions produced as a result of the use of networked IT services. It also provides a set of workable solutions to help customers reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint.

UK Houses will miss zero carbon target

(ClimateRadar.com) National Housing Federation chief executive David Orr warned that the Government is in danger of missing its target to ensure all new homes are zero carbon by 2016. Speaking at the Federation annual conference, at the ICC in Birmingham, Mr Orr revealed that while 92% of housing association new homes are already meeting minimum sustainable standards only 2% of new homes built by private developers do so.

UK: New report asks for overhauling of energy market regulation

(ClimateRadar) Energy market regulation in the UK needs to be overhauled to meet the challenges of carbon reduction and renewables targets, according to Government advisory body the Sustainable Development Commission. In a report published today (19 September), the Commission argues that reducing greenhouse gas emissions, should be made central to Ofgem’s remit in order to meet the needs of future consumers.

The report, Lost In Transmission – The role of Ofgem in a changing climate, highlights some of the ways in which Ofgem could play a long-term role in reducing carbon emissions from electricity and heat production.

Vegetarian Society launches campaign

(ClimateRadar) It is an overlooked and yet unbelievable fact: farmed animals produce more greenhouse gas emissions (18%) than the world’s entire transport system (13.5%). Today The Vegetarian Society is launching a new campaign called “Silent but Deadly” to point out that being vegetarian helps climate change, and hopefully convert more people to become vegetarian. Liz O’Neill Head of Communications at The Vegetarian Society said, “Silent but Deadly is about getting the reader’s attention, making them think, and hopefully want to find out more about the connection between diet and climate change.”
