New British Academic Center to receive £1b funding

(ClimateRadar.com) The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has been attributed to The Midlands Consortium. The Midlands Consortium is comprised of the universities of Birmingham, Loughborough and Nottingham – all with extensive and complementary energy related research activities. The new group will receive £1 billion to manage a national institute to develop cleaner energies.

Swedish tycoon becomes UK PM climate change envoy

Gordon Brown has headhunted a leading Tory party donor to become his special envoy on the environment and climate change. Johan Eliasch, a Swedish sportswear tycoon, had lent the Tories £2.6 million and was until last week the party’s deputy treasurer.

Carbon offset for EasyJet soon

Passengers using the budget carrier easyJet will soon be able to offset the carbon emissions from their flights using a scheme due to be introduced this summer. The airline is understood to be taking care to select a scheme that is accountable and whereby promised carbon benefits purchased can be verified.
